FULLY BOOKED Business After 5 with Drawing Room Architects and Iona Tiny House

A message from our hosts:

Drawingroom Architects is nearing our tenth year in business, and we wanted to host you in one of our special projects, the Iona Tiny House.

We are really interested in the visitor experience and what that can look like in places like Whanganui, and were interested in capturing the ‘cabin’ obsession of Airbnb and Instagram. We love the river and when a section became available on the bank we couldn’t say no. The house we wanted to build was one that was, like Whanganui, totally unique, grown out of it’s history, and with a low key vibe. With a random boat hull from TradeMe thrown in, Iona was born. We’re thrilled with how it’s all worked out and are loving the way she has attracted so many first time visitors to Whanganui, so far most of them Wellingtonians who love it here. We have also enjoyed our journey into adaptive re-use of several earthquake prone buildings here in Whanganui, and how that has helped to invigorate our old town and challenge people’s perceptions about old buildings. Some of the salvaged materials have made their way to Iona, and we believe they bring their own wairua to this place. We believe that the right combination of old and new is something that can make a new space comfortable, while still being a new building and bringing with it the greater light and comforts that go with that. That mixture is what we strive for as architects, even in new buildings, and what people love about Iona.

As a business we pride ourselves on our communication. We involve our clients in every stage of the project and want to empower them to enjoy going on a journey with us, making sure their essence or vision is captured in the end result.
